Men's College Basketball Almanac

Men's Division 1 National Champions

Since 1938

The Helms Foundation of Los Angeles (Bill Schroeder, founder) selected national college basketball champions from 1942-82.

The first NIT Tournament and then the NCAA Tournament have settled the national championship since 1938. There are four years (1939, 1940, 1944 and 1954) where the Helms selections differ.

NOTE: The column titled Outstanding Player is NOT a list of the official NCAA tournament Most Outstanding Players but rather a subjective list of each team's best player over the course of the season.

MULTIPLE CHAMPIONS (since 1938): UCLA (11); Kentucky (7); Indiana (5); North Carolina (3); Cincinnati, Duke, Kansas, Louisville, N.C. State, Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) and San Francisco (2).
