| NCAA Men's Division 1 Final Four |
| |
The NCAA basketball tournament began in 1939
under the sponsorship of the National Association of Basketball Coaches,
but was taken over by the NCAA in 1940.
From 1939-51, the winners of the Eastern and Western Regionals played for
the national championship, while regional runners-up shared third place.
The concept of a Final Four originated in 1952 when four teams qualified
for the first national semifinals.
Consolation games to determine overall third place were held between
regional finalists from 1946-51 and then national semifinalists from
1952-81. Consolation games were discontinued in 1982. |
